A calmer way to train

Dog training that fits a Hervey Bay lifestyle

Between beach walks along the Esplanade, work, school runs and the odd trip away, a weekly obedience class can be hard to keep up with. Our Stay & Train dog training program takes a different path. Your dog comes to stay with us on the farm and lives the training every day, so the good habits are built into real routines rather than squeezed into an hour once a week.

You drop a stressed, over-excited or unsure dog with us, and collect a calmer companion who understands what you are asking. It suits busy Hervey Bay families, retirees who want an easier dog to walk, and owners heading away who would rather their dog come home better than when they left.

Good for

  • Dogs that pull, jump or ignore recall at the beach and park
  • Anxious, nervous or reactive dogs that struggle in busy spots
  • Rescue dogs settling into a new Hervey Bay home
  • Owners who want lasting habits, not a quick fix
What your dog works on

Everyday dog obedience and real behaviour help

Hervey Bay dog owners come to us for two things: manners that hold up in the real world, and help with the behaviour that makes daily life hard. Every stay is shaped around your dog rather than a fixed class syllabus.

Everyday obedience

Reliable recall, loose-lead walking, sit, settle and impulse control, so walks around Urangan and the Esplanade are relaxed instead of hard work.

Reactivity on lead

Practical, reward-based work for dogs that bark or lunge at other dogs, bikes or people, building calmer responses step by step.

Anxiety and confidence

Gentle confidence building for nervous and anxious dogs, using routine, decompression and connection before we ask for anything.

Rescue and rehoming

Support for rescue dogs finding their feet, so a new adoption settles into family life with clear, kind boundaries.

How the Stay & Train works

Four steps from drop-off to a calmer dog

Assessment

We start by getting to know your dog's temperament and triggers, so the plan fits the dog in front of us.

Settle & decompress

Your dog eases into calm farm routines first. A settled dog learns far more than an anxious one.

Daily training

Structured daily sessions cover obedience, recall, impulse control and loose-lead walking, with pack walks and enrichment.

Handover

Before your dog comes home we show you how to keep the new habits going, so the results last in Hervey Bay.

Easy logistics

Getting your dog to the farm from Hervey Bay

The farm sits a short, easy drive inland from the bay, so your dog is never far from home while they train. Many local owners drop off and collect themselves and make a morning of it, and pick-up and drop-off can be arranged across Hervey Bay when that is easier for you.

Stay lengths depend on your goals, from a shorter stay for foundation manners to a longer stay for deeper behaviour work. You will find current stay options and pricing on our rates page, and we are always happy to talk it through first.

Handy to know

  • Drop-off 8 to 10am, pick-up 3 to 5pm, most days

The whole-dog difference

More than commands, a calmer dog in body and mind

We train from connection first. That means reward-based methods with no fear and no force, room to decompress, and real farm life with pack walks and enrichment rather than a concrete kennel. Bowen therapy and a calm environment help settle the nervous system so the training actually sticks.

If your dog simply needs a relaxed country holiday rather than a training stay, our farm dog boarding offers the same peaceful setting.

  • Reward-based, no fear and no punishment
  • Daily pack walks and enrichment on 160 acres
  • Bowen therapy to help anxious dogs settle
  • A family homestay feel, not a kennel block

Trained by someone who lives with dogs every day

The Mutts Nuts was founded by Julia Powell, who has spent five years helping Queensland dogs become calmer, happier family members. Julia works alongside her own dogs every day, including working Kelpies, and brings a practical, reward-based approach built on reading each dog rather than forcing them.

That hands-on background is why nervous, reactive and rescue dogs do so well here. You can read more about The Mutts Nuts and the way we work.

Hervey Bay dog training FAQs

Questions Hervey Bay Owners Ask About Local Dog Trainers

How far is the training farm from Hervey Bay?

The farm is at Degilbo, a short and easy drive inland from Hervey Bay. Your dog stays close to home throughout their program, and many local owners simply drop off and collect during our morning and afternoon windows.

Do you pick up and drop off in Hervey Bay?

Yes. Pick-up and drop-off can be arranged across Hervey Bay suburbs including Pialba, Scarness, Torquay, Urangan and Point Vernon. Let us know your suburb when you enquire and we will sort out the easiest option for you.

Is board and train suitable for an anxious or reactive dog?

It often suits these dogs especially well. Living in a calm farm routine gives an anxious or reactive dog time to settle before we build new habits, and everything is reward-based with no fear or force. We are happy to talk through your dog first to make sure it is the right fit.

How long will my dog need to stay?

It depends on your goals. Foundation manners can come together in a shorter stay, while deeper behaviour work takes longer. We will recommend a stay length after we understand your dog, and you can see current options on our rates page.

Do you run weekly obedience classes in Hervey Bay?

Our focus is residential Stay & Train rather than weekly classes. Instead of one lesson a week, your dog practises calm, obedient behaviour every day on the farm, and we hand those skills over to you at pick-up so they carry on at home.

What does the training cover?

Day to day we work on obedience essentials like recall, loose-lead walking, sit, settle and impulse control, alongside real behaviour help for reactivity, anxiety and rescue dogs. Every plan is tailored to your dog rather than a fixed syllabus.
